Fire Fatality in Mount Vernon Today

MOUNT VERNON—At approximately 6:46am this morning, Mount Vernon Fire crews responded to reports of a residential structure fire at 2522 Old Highway 99 South. The fire resulted in the fatality of one occupant of the residence.
Crews began arriving on scene at 6:51am and observed a single mobile home structure fully involved.
Nine occupants escaped the flames. Two of those individuals were treated on-scene for their injuries; with one requiring transport to Skagit Valley Hospital for further treatment.
Dispatch was initially informed by a caller that all of the occupants had evacuated the home, however upon arriving on scene firefighters were told by a bystander that one person remained unaccounted for.
The fire was extinguished and controlled at approximately 7:25am, and crews surveying the remains of the burnt structure confirmed the presence of one deceased person who was inside the home.
The cause of the fire is unknown, and the scene is currently under investigation. The identity of the fire victim is pending notification of family.
The family is being assisted by Red Cross and the Skagit County Support Officer Team.
Other crews from Burlington Fire, and Skagit County Fire Districts 2, 3, 6, and 9 were on scene to support firefighting efforts.
