Skagit Valley College student selected as an intern for the2021 Washington State Legislative Session

Skagit Valley College (SVC) is proud to announce that SVC student Sydney Sharp, of Anacortes, has been selected as a State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) Legislative Intern for the 2021 Legislative Session. Due to COVID-19, the internship will be carried out in a virtual format.

As a Washington State Legislative Intern, Sydney will serve as an advocate and voice for the 350,000 students in community and technical colleges in the state of Washington. This includes reaching out to various student organizations to gain a well-rounded perspective of students’ needs and relaying that information to the Washington legislature through bill testimony. In particular, Sydney will testify for House Bill 1166, regarding the expansion of a pilot program that extends access to college for the homeless and for those in the foster care system.

Sydney is a highly accomplished student who maintains a GPA of 3.8 in the midst of a full schedule of activities. She received an Associate in Science as a member of SVC’s class of 2020. She is continuing her studies at SVC and is earning an Associate of Science in Bioengineering. Her career plan is to become a biomedical engineer, a novel career that combines the medical field and engineering practices to enhance and extend the natural human life. In particular, Sydney's ideal career would be to study disease processes in humans and engineer pharmaceutical treatments.

Among her SVC leadership activities, Sydney Sharp serves as President of the SVC Mount Vernon Campus Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), as well as PTK’s Greater Northwest Region, which includes chapters in Washington, Alaska, Oregon, Montana, North Idaho, and Alberta, Canada. PTK, the international honor society for two-year colleges, symbolizes excellence in higher education and a commitment to students. In addition to her involvement with PTK, Sydney serves as a tutor in SVC’s TRIO program and is actively involved in community service projects throughout Skagit County.
