Camp Korey Named an Official Charity Partner of the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon
Camp Korey was named an Official Charity Partner for the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon, taking place on November 7. This year serves as the 50th celebratory running of the marathon. Camp Korey will be among the more than 400 official charity partners providing thousands of runners the opportunity to run in the world’s most popular marathon.
Camp Korey’s 22 “Team Korey” runners will travel from Washington state and across the U.S. to raise funds that support Camp Korey’s year-round programs. These include two women from Skagit County: Katie Roden of Mount Vernon, and Shayla Driskell of Sedro-Woolley. Shayla says, “My best friend asked me about this opportunity, and we were automatically ‘in’ on this once in a lifetime opportunity. I did not think I ever wanted to run a marathon again, but this truly inspires me to do the things I love: support others, and do something really hard.”
In addition, two special Duo Teams will run this year. The NYC Roadrunners only allows six Duo Teams per year to run their marathon. A Duo Team is a runner pushing a custom jogger with a rider athlete. One Pusher is Peter Kline of “Marathons with Meaning” who runs everything from half-marathons to ultra-marathons pushing a rider athlete who is unable to compete by running or even walking. He will be running with rider Cass Huff.
“Camp Korey is honored to be included among the 400 official charity partners in the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon” says Sue Colbourne, Camp Korey Board Member. “We are thrilled to announce that former camper, Cass Huff, will be competing in the marathon on a Duo Team with Peter Kline. Cass has an adventuresome heart and has never let her disability get in her way. Cass is currently enrolled as a freshman at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) where she is majoring in dance, drama and singing. Cass is an author and recently became the first disabled voice-over actor to be the voice of a disabled character.”
“Supporting charitable causes and organizations are a long-standing tradition of the TCS New York City Marathon as it serves as one of the world’s largest fundraising platforms,” said Christine Burke, Senior VP of Strategic Partnerships, NYRR. “The marathon exemplifies the running community’s spirit of giving back, and no group demonstrates that more than the thousands who choose to run for charity. We are proud to support the efforts of the Camp Korey team and the positive impact they have made to their community.”
The NYRR Official Charity Partner Program offers an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to raise funds to support their missions and services. Participating charities can offer guaranteed entry to runners who fundraise on their behalf.
Since its inception in 2006, the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program has raised more than $350 million for more than 1,000 worthy nonprofit organizations across the globe. Prior to the start of the official program, the New York City Marathon had served as an outlet for individual philanthropic runners since the 1980s.
The 2021 TCS New York City Marathon will commemorate the race’s 50th running with runners from all over the world participating in-person and virtually. The marathon began in 1970 and has become one of the most anticipated annual mass sporting events in New York City. This year’s marathon will once again bring together people of all ages and abilities reflecting the resilience and strength of the running community.
