Plant Spotlight: Mahonia x media 'Arthur Menzies'

This evergreen shrub is a stunning specimen for the winter garden, as well as a sure hummingbird attractant. Mahonia x media 'Arthur Menzies' has dramatic leaves that grow along coarse stems. In the winter, sprays of soft yellow flowers appear developing into grape-like clusters of wax-coated black berries by late summer and autumn (Great Plant Picks, 2020).

A Friendly Reminder

We are now charging 8 cents per bag following our new state guidelines. Please remember to bring a reusable shopping bag with you. This charge also pertains to plastic trash bags during the bare root season. Let's find inventive and sustainable ways to reuse plastic and other materials to make this transition a bit easier!

Anticipating the Bare Root Season

Starting December through March, it's bare root season at Christianson’s and that means savings on trees and shrubs for your garden, including fruit, flowering and shade trees, hydrangeas, lilacs, cane fruit, and herbaceous edibles such as strawberries, raspberries, asparagus, and rhubarb.

For more information about bare root, including helpful planting tips, check out our website for instructional videos featuring John Christianson and Lily Hirdler

To say we have a song in our hearts here in Primrose is an understatement! We are loving our 'Songs of the Season' holiday theme where every display is designed around a particular holiday song. Strolling through the shop is like walking through a holiday songbook filled with nostalgic songs we know by heart. We wondered if we might grow weary of holiday music by now but, thankfully, that's not been the case. Instead, there has been quite a bit of humming, singing, and genuine merriment!

Another unexpected delight for us is that we have been receiving orders much later than normal due to shipping delays. While this has created some challenges, it has been exciting to receive a steady stream of so many fun, tasty, and beautiful items. As we unwrap all those brown paper packages and put out the new arrivals, it's not uncommon for at least one of our team members to exclaim, "Hey! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here!"

After all the uncertainties of the past year, followed by gale force winds and flooding, we are feeling very grateful to be celebrating the holidays with dry floors, full shelves, good health, and happy hearts. We wish the same for you and your loved ones, and hope you will make it over the river and through the woods to visit us this holiday season. Cheers!

Handmade Containers and Wreaths

Now through Christmas, we will have a wonderful selection of custom containers and wreaths handmade by our in-house designers Laura Campbell and Elissa Kamins.

Each container is thoughtfully made, and their wreaths are one-of-a-kind with predominantly locally harvested greens.
