Emergency Need for Blood Donors to Book Appointments In Weeks Ahead - The Need for Blood Is ConstantOur local blood supply has hit emergency levels. We are asking everyone who is feeling healthy – especially type O donors – to please schedule a donation in the weeks ahead, ASAP. If you do not see an immediate appointment available, booking the next available appointment in the next 12 weeks is vital to stabilizing our community blood supply.
Similar to industries across the country, in particular healthcare, staffing levels are below minimum requirements. This reduces the donation opportunities for the public making the appointments that are available incredibly important – whether that appointment is this week or in 4 weeks. 100% of available appointment slots must be filled and result in a collected donation.
This is a civic duty we all share, please find a date and location to donate, make an appointment and keep that appointment. Due to high cancellation and no-show rates a number of appointment slots open on the ‘day of’ – if you cannot find a day/time that works for you, please check for regularly for ‘day of’ appointment times.
Please contact us for help locating a time and date at 800-398-7888. Due to a strong community response, we are experiencing a high call volume. We appreciate your patience and thank you for donating blood.
To understand the level of life-saving blood products on hand in local hospitals:
Currently, for ALL hospitals, we are reviewing and triaging their blood component orders, and most orders are being decreased to ensure every hospital has the absolute minimum needed on hand (not taking into account a large scale emergency. However, in the coming weeks we most likely won’t be able to safely reduce orders (more surgeries will be back on the schedule), resulting in taking longer to get back to safe levels.
Even if we can continue to triage AND fill all available appointment slots it will be multiple weeks before we are back to more than a 1-day supply. As a community let’s make sure we are stepping up and contributing to what we do have control over by making an appointment to donate.
Calculating the time frame to a safe level of inventory (due to capacity constraints and an extremely low supply):
- It will take 20 to 27 days of strong community support to meet the demand at our local hospitals and allow our supply to recover to a one day supply of blood
- It will take 38 to 57 days of strong community support to meet the demand at our local hospitals and allow our supply to recover to a two day supply of blood
- It will take 59 to 86 days of strong community support to meet the demand at our local hospitals and allow our supply to recover to a to 3+ day operational levels
