June: The Month of the Rose

Deadheading: Most modern roses will bloom all summer if properly groomed. "Deadheading" refers to the process of removing old or spend flowers from the bush. Whether you've been cutting the flowers to enjoy indoors or have left them on the bush to beautify the garden, proper trimming ensures strong reblooming.

Pruning: Rose leaves develop in sets of three, five, even seven or nine leaflets. Notice the five leaflet leaves; these are where you'll want to prune. Cut just above a five-leaflet leaf, leaving at least two sets of leaflets on the stem from which you're cutting.

Fertilizing: While most rose gardeners fertilize in the spring when growth begins, midsummer feeding is equally as important. Roses use a lot of energy to produce all those large, magnificent blooms and fertilizing ensures they remain strong and healthy through the summer and fall. You can use granular, liquid, organic or slow-release. While each formula has its advantages, keep in mind that roses prefer a fairly balanced fertilizer where the N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) ratios are fairly even ( 15-15-15 or 5-10-5).

Watering: Roses like a good, deep soak to promote deep rooting and they will develop drought tolerance if established this way. Frequent light waterings promote shallow roots that will depend on frequent watering. Applying the water slowly with soaker hoses or drip irrigation allows the water to soak in rather than running off, keeps water off the foliage and keeps fungal diseases at bay. Mulching helps by reducing evaporation and retaining moisture. (Jackson & Perkins, 2022, https://www.jacksonandperkins.com/summer-care-of-roses/a/515/).

Creating a Garden Sanctuary

Sunday, June 5th

11 a.m. - noon

We all need a personal sanctuary where we can be in harmony with the natural world and can nurture our bodies, minds, and souls. The best place to create sanctuary is in our gardens.

Author Jessi Bloom will share tips on designing healing spaces and medicinal and sacred plant profiles that are easy to use. Equal parts inspirational and practical, this lecture will have you looking at your garden in a new light, from how to harness the healing properties of plants, to simple instructions for daily rituals and practices for self-care using your space and plants.

From Garden to Vase

Sunday, June 12th 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. class size limited class fee $75

We are excited to have floral designer Kelli Walker from County Bouquets Floral back in the Schoolhouse to demonstrate the assembly of floral arrangements using fresh-cut flowers straight from the garden. Kelly will provide you with guidance as well as a vase and ribbon to create your own hand-tied bouquet to bring home and enjoy. Using Kelli’s template, you will leave feeling inspired to create and share bouquets using the flowers you have grown in your garden.

We have a great selection of Father's Day cards and unique gifts, including interesting books, hiking guides, walking sticks, binoculars, BBQ supplies, yummy treats, and so much more! If you need ideas, please ask! We are happy to help you find the perfect gifts for the dads in your life.

A new look in Primrose!

Our Primrose team has made some big changes to the shop in recent weeks. We've been cleaning, rearranging, and setting up fresh displays with many new items for summer. We have also brought in some very special antiques, including larger pieces of beautiful furniture. It's an exciting time and we hope you'll visit soon to see what we've been up to!

New Additions and Things We love

Women's Clothing

Who knew carrying clothing would be so fun? Earlier this spring we brought in a small selection of women's clothing and the response has been fabulous! We so enjoy helping you find the perfect item and learning about your upcoming trips and special celebrations. We also love hearing the laughter and oohs & aahs coming from the clothing area and dressing room. Given the positive response, we will continue to bring in more clothing in the months to come.

Culinary Treats for

Summer Gatherings

Our selection of culinary goodies continues to expand, so much so that we are now jokingly referring to our food area as 'Angie's Pantry', named after our fabulous food buyer, Angie. For starters, we have a wide assortment of delicious items for charcuterie boards, including tasty dips, specialty crackers, peach bourbon jam, honeycomb, tapenade, mustards, finishing salts, as well as boards, bowls, spreading knives, and so much more! Many of our food items are from local sources, such as Girl Meets Dirt, Cedar Spring Farm, and San Juan Island Sea Salt.

A Rosy Day Out

Sunday, June 26th

9 am- 6 pm

After the extreme weather we experienced this past winter, we are looking forward to June when we have our 19th Annual Rose Festival under the big tent centered in the beautiful Schoolhouse Rose Garden. This annual festival is beloved by the gardening community, and we always enjoy rose-related conversations throughout the day. This year, we will have wonderful discussions to attend and hope to see you in the gardens.

“A Rosy Day Out” includes a community rose display and competition in the Schoolhouse, an ice cream social in between morning and afternoon speakers, and sitting together with like-minded gardeners in the Schoolhouse Rose Garden while listening to keynote speakers. Last year, with the hot weather, the rose garden looked incredible with all the garden roses showing off their colors and enchanting us with their fragrances.

This year, we will celebrate garden roses, showcase a community rose display and rose competition (judged by the Tri-Valley Rose Society), and of course, offer tips, tricks, and experienced knowledge on rose care. And who doesn’t love to hear our favorite “Rose Buds” Ciscoe and John enthusiastically share their favorite rose companions…and give away plants too!

Happy Father's Day!
May we all be so lucky to have a figure in our life who whole-heartedly encourages us to pursue our dreams, who takes us on wild adventures, and who offers a guiding hand to hold through life's challenges.
