Rediscovering Peonies

with Lore Sampson, owner of Rarity Gardens, Mt. Hood, OR

November 15th, 2024

Noon – 1:00 p.m.

location: The Schoolhouse

complimentary! no registration required

The current resurgence in peonies is no accident. Until recently, their omission from modern garden design had persisted nearly half a century, but that’s rapidly changing as gardeners discover the exceptional qualities of newer varieties that have been specifically developed for today’s smaller, low maintenance gardens. These aren’t your grandmother’s peonies! Join Lore as she shares everything you need to know including peony selection, flower forms, planting, propagating, and care. In addition, Lore will discuss how to use peonies as cut flowers including tips on storing peonies for later use in flower arrangements and competitive shows. She will share the historical journey of three millennia of garden use of both tree and herbaceous peonies and the ongoing development of the exciting new Itoh intersectional crosses. Bring your questions and get ready to rediscover these incredibly beautiful and majestic landscape aristocrats!

Laura is a master weaver of rose hips, akebia, and grape vines. She will share her expertise during this intimate workshop where you’ll learn how to make your own handmade rosehip wreath. You will be using locally sourced wild red rosehips and Laura’s pre-made handwoven wreath vines as you weave rosehip branches into an 8-inch diameter wreath. By nature, the rosehip wreaths will dry while holding onto their berries to ensure longevity through the seasons. This is a thorny affair! Please wear long sleeves and bring a pair of pruners.

Growing Grapes in the Pacific Northwest

By Kathy Wolfe, Skagit County Master Gardener

Imagine walking through your garden on a warm summer day, picking fresh, juicy grapes and savoring their vibrant sweetness. For gardeners in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), this dream can be a reality with the right setup, varietal selection, and attention to the unique climate challenges of the region. Fresh grapes, juice, jellies, and even wine can be made right from your backyard. Western Washington has a maritime climate, with yearly rainfall varying from 20 – 60”, Our summers bring drier days than many other wine growing regions like Italy andFrance. While the long, sunny days and maritime breezes help keep mildew in check, the main challenge here is getting enough warm days (heat units) to bring grapes to their best flavor, ripeness, and acidity.

Choosing heat-tolerant grape varieties and planting them in the sunniest spots available can make all the difference. Selecting Varieties and Ideal Conditions Most PNW grapevines grow on rootstock, which can help boost cluster size and hardiness. The particular mix of geography, climate, and grape variety gives each vineyard a unique flavor, known as “terroir.” To maximize warmth, choose a south- or southwest-facing slope for your vines. Plant vines 4 to 6 feet apart, in rows that run north to south, spaced 8 to 9 feet apart to prevent shading. Gravelly, well-drained soils are ideal because they retain heat, benefiting grape development. Learn more about growing grapes on their BLOG.
