Mount Vernon Emergency Weather Declaration
Mayor Boudreau has declared a severe weather emergency in Mount Vernon, whereby locations that have been designated as severe weather shelters within Mount Vernon city limits are eligible to be opened in accordance with the provisions contained within MVMC 8.50.
With this declaration, city-approved emergency shelters are permitted to remain open until at least January 20th. Nighttime lows will continue to be monitored, as the emergency declaration may need to be extended, depending on weather conditions.
Presently, no property owners have applied to open their doors as a permitted emergency weather shelter. A newer ordinance adopted by Mount Vernon City Council (March 2019) allows for properties within the City’s “Public” zones to open their doors to individuals and families who lack adequate facilities in which to sleep and keep warm.
Entities interested in fast-permitting and opening a temporary severe weather shelter should contact the Development Services Department at (360) 336-6214.
