Local company prepared to respond to flood of calls for burst water pipes
An extended period of sub-freezing temperatures may result in a flood of emergency calls for frozen and burst pipes in Northwest Washington.
Barron Heating AC Electrical & Plumbing received well over 50 calls per day regarding burst water pipes for a week in January 2024. One Saturday in January, they received over 100 calls. The frigid temperatures that began in late January may bring a similar rate of emergencies.
“We know what to expect, especially after last year,” said Nick Stoner, Plumbing Superintendent for Barron Heating AC Electrical & Plumbing. “People need quick responses to prevent extensive water damage.”
“As frozen pipes thaw, there is a pressure change in the water pipes that can lead to burst pipes,” Stoner said. “Residents and businesses should open cabinets with any plumbing inside them, such as underneath sinks, to allow warm air to circulate in them. Also, set inside faucets so they slowly drip warm water.
If a pipe is frozen, Stoner said applying heat is recommended. However, he emphasized that one should never use an open flame to try to defrost pipes. After taking all the preventative measures listed above, open faucets and try to heat the area where the pipes are located.
Space heaters can be used if it is safe to do so, Stoner added. Heating pads or hair dryers are also a helpful option, as they can be used to directly apply heat to the pipes where they are frozen.
If a pipe bursts in your home, Stoner said you should turn off the main water line. Once the main line is shut off, open all faucets to drain the water out of the system. Leave the faucets open until you can have a professional make the repair and restore water service to your home.
